Porcupine Research

Today the AM and PM Kinders completed their porcupine research. They followed a directed drawing and then learned about the porcupines habitat, food, and special characteristics from a website called PebbleGo (it is through learnalberta).

Ask your child what they learned about the porcupine? What did we notice about the porcupines food compared to a bear and hare? are they the same or different?
How does a porcupine defend itself if it feels frightened?

- Valentines Day is coming up. If you wish to participate: there are 18 students in the AM and 20 students in the PM. Please address the valentines day cards "To My Friend"

Decade Day

Today was SO Rad!

Dressing as our favourite decade was the school "theme" for today and we did our best to dress as our favourite year!

Check out these wicked Kinders!

The AM Kinders had gym/music today.

Today the students worked on a writing task that they are familiar with. Our job today was to choose one of the animals that we have been learning about and to draw everything they know about it and add labels - focusing on the beginning and ending sounds. They all did so well with this job!
It is helpful to continue to review letter sounds at home as well :)

Representing Number 4

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend and enjoyed the nice weather!

We started our morning/afternoon off with learning tables:
- labeling a porcupine
- letter Ww
- categorizing heavy/light items and placing them on the correct side of a scale
- color by number - copying environmental print and using a color code sheet to determine the colors needed

Today both the AM and PM Kinders had gym - we are now working on a new skill - ask your child what we are learning in gym now!

Representing number 4

We worked on #4 today!

  • How many ways can we show 4 using 2 colors? using 3 colors?
  • How many ways can I represent 4 with pictures?
  • Can I show 4 on a 10 frame?
  • Can I show 4 on a number line?
  • How many tally lines do I need to draw?
  • What in the world only comes in 4?

Happy Friday!

This morning the students learned about letter Vv. We learned how to print it and the sound that it makes - ask your child what sound Vv makes and some of the words that we brainstormed that start with letter Vv.

Buddies!
Today we met our Grade 2 Buddies! Together the Kinders and Grade 2's drew self portraits of each other! We had so much fun meeting our buddy and learning about their favourite color, food and activity and how old they are.

Wonder Walk

Today we went on an investigative wonder walk -  we were on the hunt for signs of animals in the winter. We found a few hare footprints and lots of hare droppings.

Here a Hare, there a Hare, everywhere's a Snowshoe Hare!

Today the Kinders completed their Snowshoe Hare research. Together we learned about their features, their habitat, their food and 2 unique characteristics about them! Ask your child what makes the Snowshoe Hare unique and helps them survive.

Mrs. Johnston's class joined our class this morning to learn about the Hare.

Wonderful Wednesday!

AM Kinders
The students had both gym and music this morning.
After we worked on completing a task that will be sent home tomorrow.

The students were challenged to find 2 things in our classroom to help move to Mrs. Hellyer's classroom when we switch centers next week. They were challenged to find one item that was too heavy for them to help move and another that was light enough that they could move it. Students were encouraged to justify their answer as to why they could/could not move the item.
*this will be sent home tomorrow

PM Kinders

Heaver/Lighter
We have been working on using direct comparison to compare two objects based on a single attribute. We will continue to use longer and shorter/taller and are now looking at weight as well.
Today we brainstormed items that are heavier and items that are lighter than us.
Students then completed a sheet where they represented their understanding of items that are heavier and lighter than themselves.

Next, we worked on the same challenge as the morning Kinders.
The students were challenged to find 2 things in our classroom to help move to Mrs. Hellyer's classroom when we switch centers next week. They were challenged to find one item that was too heavy for them to help move and another that was light enough that they could move it. Winter Scene
Students have been working on drawing and labeling. Yesterday the students completed an assessment based on their ability to both draw and label a winter scene. Students had access to learning tools that included picture/word cards, environmental print and alphabet strips. Students were asked to draw a winter scene and label it using winter words. Using our rubric, I was able to assess their drawing.
Please find the completed work and rubric in your child's backpack today.
